Wrinkle Reduction Q & A

What are the primary types of wrinkles?

Your face develops two types of wrinkles. The fine lines and wrinkles associated with the aging process form for three simple reasons: Collagen production declines, skin becomes less elastic, and it becomes more dehydrated.

Your skin also loses volume as fat that once formed a thin cushion under your skin diminishes, drops downward, and accumulates in pockets. Exposure to ultraviolet light breaks down skin’s connective tissue, too.

The net result is loose skin and wrinkles. These wrinkles are called static wrinkles.

The second primary type – dynamic wrinkles – develop over years of repetitive muscle movement as you make facial motions like smiling, squinting, and frowning. Botox efficiently diminishes dynamic wrinkles because the treatment targets the responsible muscles.

How does Botox diminish dynamic wrinkles?

Botox is a purified form of botulinum toxin that’s injected into the muscles responsible for dynamic wrinkles. It blocks nerve signals that make the muscle contract. As a result, the muscle stays relaxed, and the wrinkle it caused diminishes or disappears.

Botox is used to treat:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Frown lines between eyebrows
  • Bunny lines at the top of your nose
  • Skin bands on your neck

How long does Botox last?

Wrinkles diminish in about 3-7 days, and the results last 3-6 months. When the effect wears off, you can get another treatment.

What is Xeomin®?

Xeomin is another brand of injectable botulinum toxin that’s used to treat dynamic wrinkles by blocking nerve activity and relaxing muscles. Its results are similar to Botox: Wrinkles diminish within a week, and the effects last 3-6 months.

Xeomin, however, is formulated differently than Botox. It contains pure botulinum toxin without any of the additives that comprise Botox and other similar products. The lack of additives eliminates the possibility of reacting negatively to extra ingredients.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure for both injectables takes about 10-20 minutes, depending on the wrinkles treated. The injected areas may be a little red for a while, but you don’t need to take time off to recover – you can get right back to your normal daily activities.
