Vaginal Rejuvenation Q & A

What is vaginal atrophy?

You need estrogen to maintain the health of your vagina. It keeps vaginal tissues elastic, maintains adequate blood flow, and supports lubrication.

Many women develop vaginal atrophy as levels of estrogen decline in the years before and after menopause. Their vaginal tissues thin out, lose elasticity, and become susceptible to inflammation.

Vaginal atrophy causes symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Vaginal burning
  • Painful intercourse
  • Pain or burning during urination
  • Urinary incontinence

How does ThermiVa® rejuvenate the vagina?

ThermiVa is an innovative medical device that uses radiofrequency (RF) energy to rejuvenate tissues inside the vagina. Dr. Long inserts a specially designed applicator into your vagina, which emits RF waves that penetrate through its tissues.

RF energy gently heats vaginal tissues, which has an immediate tightening effect as collagen proteins contract. The heat then reaches a therapeutic temperature that activates the production of new collagen and increases blood flow.

As the boost in collagen and blood flow regenerate tissues, the tone and texture of the vaginal lining improve and the vaginal wall tightens. You regain vaginal health and symptoms of vaginal atrophy disappear.

What should you expect during and after treatment with ThermiVa?

One ThermiVa session takes about 30 minutes. During that time most women are quite comfortable because the treatment is gentle and well-tolerated. The ThermiVa device monitors tissue temperatures and RF energy to ensure your safety.

You can return to your normal activities as soon as your treatment is over. Many women don’t experience side effects, but you may have some slight redness and swelling. Dr. Long may recommend avoiding sexual intercourse for a few days to give vaginal tissues time to heal.

When will you notice results?

Results develop gradually as blood supply improves and new collagen develops to replace atrophied tissues. In fact, the changes continue to occur for about six months after your treatment, but you notice results before then.

In addition to vaginal rejuvenation, symptoms of stress urinary incontinence also may improve following ThermiVa treatment.

You may notice a significant improvement after your first ThermiVa session, but many women get 2-3 treatments initially. After that, the results are long-lasting, and you only need maintenance treatment once yearly.
