What is an IPL photofacial?

An intense pulsed light (IPL) laser uses many wavelengths of specially filtered light. By comparison, other lasers only operate on one wavelength at a time. Differently colored pigments in your skin absorb specific wavelengths, which means that an IPL laser can treat multiple facial discolorations at one time.

As pigments absorb light energy, they heat up and break down. Then your body naturally eliminates the waste and the pigment permanently.

IPL photofacials efficiently improve your skin tone by eliminating discolorations. A photofacial can also tighten and strengthen your skin by stimulating collagen production.

Aesthetic concerns treated with an IPL photofacial include:

  • Age spots, sun spots, and freckles

What other pigment-related concerns are treated with lasers?

These aesthetic procedures target different issues, yet they’re all treated efficiently with lasers due to their colored pigments:  

Hair removal

Lasers can be set to a wavelength that’s absorbed by pigments in the hair follicle but doesn’t affect the surrounding skin. Heat from the laser destroys the hair follicle, so it can’t grow new hair.

Tattoo removal

Dr. Long uses the cutting-edge laser technology available in the Alma PicoClear laser system to eliminate multi-colored tattoos in fewer treatments than most other lasers. This laser has four wavelengths, each one for different ink colors, and it can be set to different pulse speeds to customize your treatment.

Leg vein treatment

Leg vein sclerotherapy eliminates visible leg veins by injecting a chemical that makes the vein collapse. Laser vein treatment accomplishes the same goal without an injection. Instead, it uses a wavelength that’s absorbed by the red and blue pigments in your veins, then breaks them down.

Can one laser system target multiple aesthetic problems?

Dr. Long proudly performs aesthetic procedures using state-of-the-art laser systems that are multi-application platforms. Two systems available in her office, Lumenis® IPL M22 and the Harmony XL, are designed to provide several aesthetic treatments.

The Lumenis IPL M22 treats more than 20 skin conditions, such as vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, active acne, and hair removal. The Harmony XL provides skin resurfacing and rejuvenation of facial tone and texture, as well as pigment clearance, hair removal, and acne treatment.
