Stem Cells & Exosomes Q & A

What are the umbilical cord stem cells? Are they safe?

According to the FDA’s and AABB’s donor eligibility guidelines, the umbilical cord blood was collected from a health, disease free woman (by medical history, social history and blood test) donor at the time of her delivery. The cells are processed using a proprietary method. It is sent to an independent 3rd party CLIA Lab for sterility testing and has passed the regulatory requirements.

How do the stem cells actually work?

When umbilical cord stem cells are placed into an environment of injured tissue, the stem cells go to work inhibiting the damaging inflammatory components and modulating the immune system.  At the same time, the monocleated cells produce growth factors that increase vasculature and nourish damaged cells back to health and stimulate our own cells to regenerate themselves.

How many types of stem cells are available? Why do we choose umbilical cord blood stem cells?

Live nucleated cells from umbilical cord blood are young, vibrant cells that have not been affected by age or disease.  Whereas bone marrow aspirate and adipose-derived stem cells are significantly older and potentially damaged by disease.

How soon after the injection can I expect to have some improvement?

For the joint injection, some people will experience pain relief within hours or a few days depend on the present state of the patient’s joint.

What activity level can I have after the injection?

NOT increase your activity level above your pre-injection activity level.  Give the cells 3 weeks to aid in repair PRIOR to starting an exercise regimen that should be slowly progressing to pre-injection states.

  1. NO NSAIDS/Biologic 3 days prior or 3 months after the injection.
